Untrendy

Now I’ve had several posts with trend themes, which surprises me because I don’t like trends. After examining myself, I realize that it’s because the trends I’ve written about are actually completely in line with my interior design taste.

Both environmentally and stylistically, it is to furnish in a way that defies both trends and the test of time. I wonder how many people think, now I’m going to buy a sofa that will last at least 20 years in terms of both appearance and quality, not many I would think.

At least not when you look at the range on the market. I appreciate that most of the range consists of square, bulky, dark grey sofas. In five years they will be “out” and replaced with something new and trendy, and so it will continue. What a waste of resources!

One who had an eye for this was Coco Chanel, one of her famous quotes is “Fashion is what becomes unfashionable”. She meant clothes of course, but it applies to interior design as well. Her apartment on rue Cambon in Paris is a living document of this. The apartment has been preserved in the condition it was in the 30s. Admittedly, there are many expensive objects, but the essence, the color choices and the style itself are timeless. I would think that if the apartment is allowed to remain as it is for another 100 years, the same thing could be said.
