I think it’s time for a little more inspiration for outdoor spaces.
I have two patio favorites, one is the American porch as seen in countless movies. They are usually quite large and there is room for both seating and dining. But what is most attractive about these porches are the obligatory rocking chairs or porch swings. The idea is so peaceful, to slowly swing and look out towards, preferably, a beautiful landscape. But more often it is towards the neighbors on the other side I would think….
Sure, American verandas are lovely…
My other patio favorite is the French pergola. Ideally, it should have a roof with winding vines, a large dark oak dining table with chairs with bast seats, or black iron furniture, then it’s truly French!
Unfortunately, the French pergola with its flamboyant vegetation is not feasible in our harsh climate, but you can imitate the furniture and the feel.
I actually have a project in the works and that is to get a patio on the country house. Even though we have had the house for so long, there has never been any real outdoor seating. One reason is that there has always been some kind of renovation going on so there has been mostly work and too little time for rest. The times we have wanted to sit outside or have a party, we have lifted out the kitchen or dining room furniture.
But now the cottage is going to be tidied up. We found a fantastic table on the block, specially designed for the previous owner. It is made of solid birch and has an inlay of reinforced glass, both practical and decorative. We are in the process of preparing it for outdoor use and have done an initial coat of black oil.
